Firefighters in Los Angeles are busier than ever. UCLA has canceled in-person classes. Getty Center has been evacuated. People from all over Los Angeles are experiencing the consequences of the Palisades fire, the most destructive wildfire in LA’s history, which initial roots began on New Year’s Day.

As of January 11th, investigating reports show that 13 are missing, and about 5,300 structures have been destroyed from the Palisades fire. Fires from surrounding areas in LA have erupted as well, such as the fires of Eaton and Hurst.

Many speculate that the area’s dry period along with offshore winds have caused these fires to emerge. Although some deny the impact of climate change in the current situation, experts have claimed climate change is increasing the probability. ‘Whiplash” is used as a term referring to the rapid switch between dry and wet periods, which results in vegetation that is easy to burn. A new study shows that globally, climate change has exacerbated these whiplash conditions by 31-66% since the middle of the 20th century.

As for misinformation, rumors have surfaced about LA’s fire hydrants. It was discovered that around 200 fire hydrants were dry, with some blaming California’s lack of action to store water during the winter season. These assumptions were corrected during a press conference with the chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. He revealed that the water distribution system was in demand more than four times than previous amounts. It was also explained that fire hydrants require time for their tanks to be refilled and pressure to be restored.

While wishing the best for those affected by fires or those at risk, we should acknowledge the interference of climate change in our daily lives. We must do our best to prioritize and reverse the effects of climate change, as this serves as one of our many wake-up calls.
