The wait is almost over — Hundreds of governmental and private organizations around the world are gearing up for the upcoming 29th Edition of UNFCCC’s Conference of the Parties, which is to be held in Azerbaijan’s vibrant commercial hub and capital city Baku from the 11th of November to the 22nd.
This year’s theme is "In Solidarity for a Green World", with the conference's broader objectives including Limiting global warming to 1.5°C, Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Promoting sustainable practices, Transitioning to low-carbon economies, Supporting vulnerable communities
and Increasing renewable energy, among many other crucial topics concerning climate and global warming for deliberation by the parties in attendance.
Now, many young environmental activists or aspiring environmentalists might still be unaware of the importance of this event or why this conference might be of significance to a person not actively attending the event as a negotiator.
Well, Here’s your answer.
Every year, Environmentalists and climate change activists await the arrival of this event and the subsequent release of its action plans and outcomes for them to discuss privately and on social media platforms. This allows us as the general public to analyze, appreciate, and critique the provided proposals and objectives which we then can urge future negotiators to keep in mind for the next scheduled conference. Additionally, The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC, thus requiring all States that are Parties to the Convention to be represented at the COP and to be called upon to review, discuss, and innovate upon the given objectives. Thus, it provides the general public a clearer idea of what their respective state’s opinion is on major environmental issues, beyond what their national manifestos can provide them.
As the very future of this world, it is our first and foremost duty to be aware of the onus we have to bear of protecting this world for ourselves and the subsequent generations to be able to thrive in. By actively involving and educating ourselves on current and past environmental issues and conferences, such as UNFCCC’s COP, we are ensuring a more holistic path for ourselves to tread upon toward our ultimate goal of a cleaner, safer planet.
